Get Ready for Our Annual ‘Salute to Veterans’ Event
5/1/2017
By Rep. Steve Mentzer (R-Lititz)
In conjunction with the Lancaster Barnstormers, veterans groups and local sponsors, I am inviting residents to begin registering for the 2017 “Salute to Veterans.” This year’s event will be held on Friday, May 19, at 5:15 p.m. at Clipper Magazine Stadium, located at 650 N. Prince St. Gates open at 4 p.m.

This Salute to Veterans marks a time when our community comes together to honor the dedication and sacrifices made by members of our nation’s military. Former Rep. John Bear began this tradition nine years ago, and since that time my staff and our sponsors have worked to ensure that we continue to recognize our veterans for all that they’ve done for our country.

Veterans and their guest are invited to a Lancaster Barnstormers baseball game, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. Both will receive free admittance to the game and Barnstormer Bucks to spend on refreshments. Beginning at 5:15 p.m., an on-field ceremony will honor veterans, featuring performances by hometown favorites the New Holland Band and the Washington Memorial Pipe Band. Former WGAL anchor Dick Hoxworth, a Vietnam veteran, will again serve as emcee for the evening’s activities.

This year’s sponsors include American Legion Garden Spot Post No. 56, Sechan Electronics, AAVID Thermacore, Fluid Conditioning Products, Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes and Crematory, Clair Global, Ultra Electronics, Benchmark Construction, Germania Band Club, Worley and Obetz, and Lititz Springs VFW Post 1463.

Also, this year, if you would like to bring canned goods for donation, we will be “filling the boat.” The Navy Club of Lancaster, Ship No.166, will have its PT Boat at the stadium to collect canned goods to donate to veterans in need.

Seating is limited for the event, so reservations are required, and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Veterans can register for the event by filling out the electronic form on my website, RepMentzer.com, or by contacting my office at (717) 626-1776. If registering for the event by phone, please be sure to call during office hours: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
